Seiyô Soka Zufu 西æ´èè±å³èOe
1917. [EHON] Tanigami Knan 谷上廣南, artist. Seiy SOKA ZUFU 西洋草花図oe. Kyoto: Unsd 芸艸堂, Taish 6 [1917]. 5 volumes. Orihon folding albums, each 27.8 x 18.8 cm, in green boards with printed paper title labels. There are two "Spring" volumes, bound separately, two "Summer" volumes, then "Fall" & "Winter" are bound together with a cover uniform with the other four and an appropriate publisher's title slip. They are in a custom fitted chitsu clasped case with a supplied title label. Each season has a table of contents listing the prints [in English, kana and kanji, where appropriate]. This complete set consists of 125 (each image size 22.4 x 33.1cm) double page prints. There is no mention of this book in any of the standard Western references (a fact which illustrates again the need for an Unsd bibliography!) These "Seiy", i.e. "Western", flowers are depicted in a realistic fashion and printed in lovely rich colors with a great deal of skill. No bald descriptive text intrudes upon the print itself. The captions are banished to the margin. The impressions and condition are very good, and the colors lovely. This set used to be available in the marketplace in Japan but when I bought this, I realized we had not handled a nice complete copy like this in over a decade!.

Kanji ShåHin Gashå« è¦³ç¾å°åç»é
1933. Kanji Shōhin Gashū 観爾小品画集 [Maria Gabō マリア画房, publisher] [Kyoto] [Showa 8 (1933)] [Flowers, Botanical]. Kanji Shōhin Gashū [Kyoto], [Maria Gabō マリア画房, publisher], [Showa 8 (1933)]. 15 oblong color woodblock prints of flowers 29.5 x 41.6 cm, many in fan format. Maria Gabō マリア画房 was a very skilled woodblock printing house in the 1930s. Their aesthetic sense differs from others of the period; the palette is subtler, the printing more "boneless" - overall a more painterly effect is achieved in this group of prints by two of the most celebrated Kyoto artists of the day, Kobayashi Kanji 小林観爾 (1892-1974) and Matsumura Suiho 松村翆鳳. Here, publisher Maria Gabō has created prints embellished with all the effects of a deluxe production, with bokashi, mica, overprinting and other techniques. Kobayashi Kanji 小林観爾 (1892-1974) was born in Nagasaki prefecture and studied under established artist Araki Jippo 荒oe十畝 (1872-1944), graduating from Kyoto Municipal Painting College 京都市立絵画専門学校 (now Kyoto City University of Arts 京都市立芸大). In Taisho 14 [1925] he was awarded a prize for his painting of a Chinese peony in the annual prestigious art exhibition Teikokubijutsuin 帝国美術院展覧会 [Imperial Art Academy Exhibition]. He was known particularly for his bird and flower paintings. Matsumura Suiho 松村翆鳳 was a painting teacher and a designer of kimono patterns. The original ribbon-bound boards with printed paper title label are worn, yet the prints themselves are very good. Maria Gabō productions have almost always been broken up for the prints, so this is a very unusual collection. Complete. .

 Ohara To^do^, To^Do^ Ihitsu 6 Volumes
Ohara To^do^
To^Do^ Ihitsu 6 Volumes
1850. Ohara Todo (1746-1821), author. Todo Ihitsu. Wakayama, O^saka, Kyo^to, Edo. 6 volumes. complete. Todo was a samurai scholar from the Kii peninsula. As the tile would indicate, these are posthumous records of his extensive research in botany and natural history. It would appear that there was an intention to produce a set of 10 volumes in the series. In the event, only the first series (1833) and second series (1850) appeared. We have all six volumes of the two series. Comparing our copy of the first series of three volumes to the copy owned by Waseda University which is illustrated online, ours is in identical covers with original printed title labels, BUT, it is missing the inner pastedown pages that were the title page in volume one and the colophon in volume three. The second series has both title page and colophon. One can only hypothesize. Comparing block wear, our first series appears to be an early impression, especially as it has the distinctive yellow printed covers of the first appearance. The second series from 1850 uses a different cover. My guess would be the first series dates to the 1830s or 40s and the second series close to its colophon date of 1850. The TO^DO^ IHITSU is an important book, cited in such botanical bibliographies as Bartlett and Shiohara as significant... for those who read Japanese, there is an excellent precis at https://blog.goo.ne.jp/inorimusigha/e/884f76005115e9e2de119588ba13482a I must say that the images in the set are truly lovely, interesting and very well printed. There are not many of them, a total of some 46 pages - some single page, some double page, and atwo integrated into the text. They have become quite famous images, as a glance at a few will illustrate. The printing and colrs are excellent. There is a bit of worming to volume six, but overall a very nice copy of this classic. Enclosed in a vintage clasped chuitsu case. Complete. .
